Live NE News
Public Education Northeast (PEN) is attempting to better understand what school programs and offerings are important to parents, students, and the community of northeast Minneapolis. We wish to collect opinions from as many parents of students and other stakeholders in the northeast corridor, including current Minneapolis Public School (MPS) parents as well as parents of children who have chosen other schools. We really want to know the reasons for how you make decisions about your child’s education.

The MPS school board is in the process of completing a strategic planning process which will allow them to shape the direction of all schools.

How do we wish to shape the schools in the northeast community?

That’s why your input is crucial!

Edison Staff, Parent & NE Community Barbecue PDF Print E-mail

You are invited to attend the Northeast Community, Edison Staff & Parent Barbeque on August 30th, from 3 to 9 PM.  It will be located at 705 22nd Avenue NE.

That's the recently renovated Craftsman Styled Bungalow just across the street from Edison.  Edison staff, Edison students, PEN volunteers, Neighborhood Organization Leaders, local contractors, civil servants and many other neighbors / Edison graduates from all over Northeast Minneapolis worked on the house this summer.  At the barbeque, it will be open for previews!  View the photo gallery of the renovation by clicking here.

The event is co-sponsored by Edison High School, HNIA (Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association), PEN (Parents Educate Northeast), The NE Kiwanis, Lupient BPG, Barley John's Brewpub, 901 Dentistry, Central Avenue Liquors, Columbia Grounds Coffee, Sentryz Grocers & Rock Solid Realty MN.

Special thanks goes out to new Edison Principal, Carla Steinbach and HNIA Project Director, Kevin Reich.  In a very short time, Carla is proving to our community, she is willing to go beyond the call of duty and give it the extra touch.  Thanks again to Kevin "Mr. Northeast" Reich - this event woudn't be happening without you.

Celebrity grill-meisters will be on station attending to the Northeast Minneapolis' style grill - a 4' x 5' on wheels!  The 3-5 PM  grilling slot is most critical because this is the time the Edison staff will be joining the crowd.  Then, at 5 PM energized with brats, burgers and dogs they will return to Edison, ready for a strong parent / teacher open house.  Carla Steinbach, the new principal and the rest of the Edison team wants to start the year off running right up the middle.  You can't give or get good education on an empty stomach.   With this critical task in mind and after much debate, it has been determined Northeast legendary coaches Shaun Wakaruk and Niles Schulz must be at the grill from 3-5.  This is not a job that can be left to others.

At 5 PM Coach Wakaruk & Coach Schulz will open the beer tap, uncork the wine and pass the torch to a new generation of Northeasters.  The coaches realize these guys are a little young (all around 40) but have proven worthy to serve Northeast.  From 5 to 7 PM, Bill Jaap- owner Good Carma Volkswagen, Jim Grell-owner Modern Cafe and Kevin O'Brien of M & M Mortgage will be in charge of the grill.  Kevin was the original owner of O'Brien's Decoy Pub & Smokehouse and was a chef at Rudolph's for many years prior.  Bill, Jim & Kevin will be serving Northeast from 5-7.

John Moore & Laura Subak own Barley John's Brewpub and will be providing the Beer - not just any beer, Barley John's beer.  John Thomas, owner Central Avenue Liquors will be providing the wine.  Jim & Sherry Tanberg, graduates of Edison High School, owners of Columbia Grounds coffee will be providing the coffee!  Other non-alcoholic beverages will be provided by Kurt Nowacki of Rock Solid Realty MN.

As more sponsors come on board they will be announced!  Neighborhood associations, community activists, Edison administration,  school board, NRP leaders, Library Board and others anticipating the final decision on the remaining grill-meistering team, keep your eyes on your laptops and bookmark LiveNE.info!

Edison staff will be welcomed back after the Edison Parent / Teacher Open House is over.

This is a great opportunity to get to know the Edison teachers, the core of our community.   Again, the best time to meet the Edison teachers is from 3 PM - 5 PM.  Bring your friends to the celebration!

We are expecting Edison staff to stop back over from 8 - 9 PM and enjoy the last hour of the event.  We hope you can stop working for a little while and come on over and join your friends!

P.S.  HNIA, EHS and others are working hard on renovating the backstop and softball field just NE of Edison in Jackson Square Park.  For more information on that project click here .
